Agnes Irene Ezell was born July 7, 1930 in Dallas County Alabama, the third child and second daughter of Samuel Akins Ezell and Clara Jackson Ezell. No matter where she went or who she met the very first thing they recognized about Agnes was that she was a strong Christian lady. Growing up in south Dallas and Wilcox counties she moved around a lot. That seems to be a trait that stayed with her the rest of her life as she was constantly on the go. One of the first jobs she had while attending AG Parrish High School was a Counter Girl at S H Kress Company. She later got her first banking job at the Peoples Bank and Trust Company where she started out as a Runner. She later took a job at the Selma National Bank as a bookkeeper which was the profession that she pursued for the better part of 40 years of her life.
She met and later married David Mike Edwards in 1947 and they had 2 sons together; David Michael Edwards and Samuel Lawrence Edwards. In the late 1950’s David built a store while working for Cloverleaf Dairies of Selma and she left the bank to run the store. She was very active and involved in many activities of Suttle School particularly after Michael started to school there. She was a member and then President of the PTA, whereby she planned and participated in events such as square dances, carnivals, and school field trips. She was also an active member of Ocmulgee Baptist Church planning, organizing, and teaching Vacation Bible School, Christmas programs, WMU, Training Union, Bible Study Courses, and singing in the choir.
She continued her active lifestyle even after leaving the Suttle and Ocmulgee communities where she was active in Westwood Baptist Church. If the church doors were open she was there. Again she was a choir member, Vacation Bible School teacher, organizer and leader in the WMU, GA, and Acteens programs, and a member of numerous church committees. She started the RLWs at Westwood Baptist Church in 1982. She served as the Mission Action leader for Westwood Baptist Church, then later for the Association, and then was the Association Director. She was a missionary going on several mission trips to spread the Gospel to adults and children across America.
In 1989 she left Selma and moved to Montgomery where she was the bookkeeper for the Governor’s House Hotel. She worked there for 6 ½ years and ended up as the Assistant to the Manager. She moved to Brent, Alabama in 1995 and was active in both the Brent and Centreville Baptist churches. She was always helping and doing for older people while there taking them to activities, to doctor’s appointments, and shopping. She was a regular visitor to the nursing home. She was physically fit, always exercising, walking, and staying in shape all the way up into her latter years. Everywhere that she went she was loved and respected by all. There is no one that she ever met that did not love Agnes. She has a lot of friends in Selma, Montgomery, and the Brent/Centreville area.
She is survived by husband: Buddy Clark; sons: David Michael Edwards of Centerville, Samuel Lawrence Edwards of Huntsville; sister: Bertha Ezell Wyatt of Selma; brother: Sam Pressley Ezell of Pell City; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
