Andrew High

Andrew Dennison High, Jr, 76, died on January 5, 2018 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease.  He is survived by his wife Anne of Tyler and his sons William James High, III (Claire) of Tuscaloosa and Robert Andrew High of Raleigh, North Carolina.  Also surviving him are stepson Jay Minter of Selma, grandchildren Anna High of Tuscaloosa and Gilley, Cink, and Madge Minter of Selma, and numerous other family members.  He was preceded in death by his parents William James High, Jr. and Florence Voltz High.

Andy, a native Selmian, was very active in the YMCA growing up and worked many summers as a counselor at Camp Grist.  After graduating from Parrish High School, he matriculated at the University of Alabama where he was on a swimming scholarship.  His fascination with flying led him into his lifelong career as an airline pilot.  He flew for Braniff, Piedmont, and U.S. Airways over the course of his profession.  He ultimately served as a flight instructor in the final years of his worklife.  Andy's love of flying was matched by his love of the sea and boating.  Many hours of his retirement were spent on his boat at the coast and flying his Piper Cub airplane which was hangared at Craig.  Andy also had a deep love of nature and the outdoors which he imparted onto his sons.

The family wishes to extend its deepest thanks to all the staff of Cedar Hill Assisted Living, where Andy lived most of his final two years, and also to his many other nurses, caregivers, and sitters.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Cedar Hill Assisted Living, the Alzheimer's Association of Alabama, or Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, January 8th with Rev. Steve Burton officiating, and visitation will be in the church's Warren Room one hour beforehand at 1:00 P.M.  Burial will be held privately with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.
