Ann Morthland

Funeral services for Ann Cooper Plant Morthland, who died peacefully on September 9, 2010, will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Church Street United Methodist Church with the Reverend Fred Ziegler officiating. A private graveside service will follow. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Saturday, September 11th at Lawrence-Brown Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Charles Frazer, Pat Haley, Julian Howell, Phillip Johnson, Bibb Lamar, Clyde Rivers, Randy Smith, Fred Williams and Perry Woodruff. A native of Selma, she was born on March 1, 1914, the daughter of William Henry Plant, Sr. and Annie Cooper Plant. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. After graduation, she moved to Chicago, Illinois where she met and married Rex J Morthland. After living in Chicago, they moved to Storrs, Connecticut where he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut. During World War II, while Rex served in Europe, Ann returned to Selma to live her parents. Following the war, the Morthlands made Selma home. Mrs. Morthland was a life time member of Church Street United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Ossian Club, The National Society of Colonial Dames in America, the Selma Charity League and Pandora. She was an avid reader and bridge player. Her highest affections were shared by her children, her family, her church and her close personal friends who were extended family. She was blessed with a tremendous love of life, love of people and a grand sense of humor throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother William Henry Plant, Jr. and sister in law Doris Plant Thomas. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Richard Plant Morthland and his wife Bobbie Martin Morthland of Selma, AL, Mary Ann Morthland Patterson and her husband Marshall Scott Patterson of Selma, AL and Edith Plant Morthland Jones and her husband John Larry Jones of Selma, AL ; her grandchildren William Marshall Patterson, III and his wife Christina of McMinnville, TN, Alan Cooper Leach and his wife Roberta of Selma, AL, Martin Plant Morthland and his wife Kerri of Brunswick, ME, Jason Price Jones and his wife Britt of Atlanta, GA, Ann Plant Patterson Powell and her husband Andy of Baltimore, MD, Rex Morthland Jones and his wife Kim of Orange Beach, AL, William Plant Morthland and his wife Jennifer of Helena, AL, Elizabeth Jones Roosevelt and her husband Ben of Atlanta, GA; nieces Sandi Walker Smith and husband Charles Atkin of East Lansing, MI, Mildred Plant Masten and husband Daniel of Greencastle IN and Mary Ann Plant of Selma, AL. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Brooks Leach, Clay Cooper Leach, Abilene Plant Morthland, Averly Catherine Morthland, Adam Santos-Powell, Sefa Santos-Powell, Annie Cooper Powell, Richard Plant Morthland, II, Ramsey Price Jones, Ian Oliver Jones and Emma Morgan Jones. The family appreciates the love given to her by all of her friends and the community of Selma.
