Brice Mitchell Thorne, age 92, of Valley Grande, AL, passed away February 10, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Eleanor Howell Thorne. He is survived by his daughters, Judy Thorne Blalock and Elaine Thorne Stewart; sons-in-law, David L. Blalock and T. Wayne Stewart; five grandchildren, Julie Howell Moates, Elizabeth Howell (Michael) Cox, Parker Thorne (Brigid) Howell, Brice Lanier (Michelle) Wilson and Jeffrey Bender Wilson; eleven great-grandchildren, Eleanor Anne Shelley, Julia Marshall Shelley, Mitchell Wright Cox, Sarah Agna Cox, Liberty Elizabeth Cox, Julian Patrick Howell, Emily Parker Howell, Audrey Marie Wilson, Thorne Daniel Wilson, Leigh Ann Lanier Wilson and Garrett Bender Wilson; two nephews, Phillip F. Hurt, Jr. and Richard Thorne Hurt and special companions, Bobbie and Sassy Sox. Mr. Thorne served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed at Craig Field. Mr. Thorne was a member of First Christian Church for 67 years where he served as a deacon, elder, trustee, Sunday school teacher and a Boy Scout leader. In recent years he was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Thorne was an avid hunter, golfer and reader. He was also a long time member of Selma Elks Club. A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Monday, February 14, 2011 at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Glenn Smith, Rev. Russell Morrow and Rev. Elizabeth Cox officiating. A visitation will be held immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to be made to Cahaba Hospice of Selma, Memorial United Methodist Church, Selma Public Library, Selma Area Food Bank or a favorite charity.
