Fredrica Caroline Smith-Kenan died at the age of 86, on January 1, 2016. Caroline was born in Greensboro, Alabama on August 27, 1929, to Fredrica Reese Wheeler Smith and Julien Smith. She attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee and later graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Delta. She served as a Pink Lady at Vaughn Memorial Hospital for twelve years. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and also was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. Caroline is survived by her five children Reese Kenan Lewis (Mattson), Julia Kenan Willcox (Charles), Elizabeth "Bet" Kenan Hamilton (Bill), Jim Kenan (Melissa), Mary Owen Kenan Thames (Gordon); her ten grandchildren Crawford Kenan Lewis, Doniphan Wheeler Lewis, Mary Mattson Lewis, Sarah Caroline Willcox, William Henry Hamilton (Rebecca), James Kenan Hamilton, William Owen Kenan II, Frances Elizabeth Kenan, Ella Caroline Thames, Mary Elizabeth Thames and one great grandchild Rivers Elizabeth Hamilton. The family will hold a private burial service in Selma. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 210 Lauderdale Street, Selma, AL 36701.
