Edward Cecil Lane, age 92, a resident of Benton, AL, passed away December 4, 2007.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Lanelle Berryman Lane and Sue Chambless Lane.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Lane; sons, Tommy (Brenda) Lane and Pierce (Cindy) Lane; daughter, Mitzi (Ronnie) Holladay; grandchildren, Sandi (Clark) Caldwell, Lane (Heather) Holladay, Richard (Whitney) Holladay, Brandy (Josh) Newton, Brad (April) Lane, Lowery Lane and Whit Lane; great-grandchildren, Laney Holladay, Aubrey Holladay, Sarah Grace Holladay, Maggie Holladay, Hope Holladay, Abigail Lane, Faith Lane and Riley Lane; special family friend, Maxine Gaines and caregivers, Carolyn Smith and Pat Bell.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Benton Baptist Church with Rev. Lee Tate, Dr. Dan Ireland and Rev. Elwood Sims officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Interment will be in the Benton Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Southern Sportsman Hunting Lodge on Hwy 80E, at mile marker 104, after the services.
Serving as pallbearers are his grandsons, Lane Holladay, Richard Holladay, Brad Lane, Whit Lane, Clark Caldwell and Josh Newton. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Benton Baptist Church, past presidents of Alabama Cattlemen's Association, Southeastern Livestock Exposition Hall of Fame members, officers and the Board of Directors of First Lowndes Bank, and also, Bill Mooneyham, Dan Myers, Allen Taylor and Don Freeman.
Mr. Lane was a deacon, usher, and superintendent of Benton Baptist Church, board member of ALCAP, one of the founders of Lowndes Academy and served as president of the Board of Trustees. He also served as president of Lowndes County Cattlemen's Association and Alabama Cattlemen's Association, treasurer of Alabama Cattleman's Association. He was the first cattleman from Alabama to be appointed to the National Cattleman's Beef board. He was a charter member of the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Honor of College of Agriculture from Auburn Univerity and was also inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Montgomery Motorcycle Club and rode competitively on the Harley-Davidson factory team in many endurance runs across the nation, winning the Jack Pine Event in Lansing Michigan.
