Cecil W. Bennett, age 94, passed away February 24, 2011 at Decatur General Hospital in Decatur, Alabama. Cecil was born in Suttle, Alabama and grew up on a farm with his parents and eight siblings, Clarence, B. A., James, Clifton, Ruby, Vera (Barnett), Lillian (Melton) and Clarice (Hale), who all preceded him in death. He graduated from Felix High School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in the Panama Canal Zone. He re-enlisted when the United States entered WWII and served as a sergeant in a headquarters company which served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and was in Czechoslovakia when the European war ended. After the war, he took a supervisory position with Dallas Compress Company in Selma, Alabama where he was employed until his retirement. He married Doris Johnson, a resident of Selma, Alabama in 1943 and they had two sons. Doris passed away in April, 1991. Cecil is survived by his two sons, Don (Diane) Bennett of Grandville, MI and Rick (Gale) Bennett of Decatur, AL; grandsons, Derek Bennett of Roseville, MI and David Bennett of Decatur, AL and numerous nieces and nephews. Cecil was a devoted member of Elkdale Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, gardening and visiting family and church friends. Graveside services will be Monday, February 28, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Pineview Memory Gardens with Rev. Al Finch officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be prior to the service from 2-3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
