Charles Payne

Charles Hillman Payne passed into Eternal Life on January 18th. He was born to Life on May 15, 1935.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary A. Payne. Preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Louis E. Payne, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Hillman Payne "Bess" of Selma, and a brother, Louise E. Payne, Jr. Survivors include a sister, Iler Katherine Walden and brother-in-law George Walden, Bristol, VA., brother-in-law Paul E. Prescott, Sr. (Linda), sister-in-laws, Faye Dobbs, (Raymond) Prattville, Betty Brady (Kenneth), Gulf Shores, and Carolyn Duke (Roger) Selma, four nephews and ten nieces.

Mr. Payne retired from United Methodist Children's Home as Campus Director of Recreation and Campus Activities for 33 years. Prior to returning to Selma in 1965 he was employed by the Linden Board of Education as basketball coach, assistant football coach and baseball coach. He taught history which was a love and interest his entire life.

Known to all his friends and former students as "Coach" he was an avid Alabama fan. Mr. Payne held a B.S. Degree from Troy State Teacher's College (Troy University), a Master's in Education and Major in Guidance and Counseling, Livingston University, Livingston, Al (West Alabama), University of Alabama, he had credits in the Field of Therapeutic Recreation. He was a recipient of the Boy Scout Award of Merit for Distinguished service, Dallas County; Honorary Boy Scout Award for the Order of the Arrow. Candidate for the Silver Beaver Award, Department of Human Resources, State of Alabama-Honorary Mention for saving the life of a drowning victim, Inductee into the Interdenominational Good Shepard Organization for Christian Men and Women, Certificate of Appreciation, Dixie Youth Baseball League Committee Officials and the Alabama State Championship in Football for Class 2A High school, Linden, AL.

Former member of the National Parks and Recreation Association., Treasurer and Chairman of Boy Scout Troop #126, The Promise Keepers Organization for Christian Men , Alabama Education Association for Teachers, Past President Good Shepard Christian Organization, taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church and couples class, Elkdale Baptist.

Visitation will be held on Friday January 20, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 21, at New Live Oak Cemetery with the Reverend Mike Spivey, St. Paul United Methodist, Boaz, officiating.

Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity or to the Selma Y.M.C.A., Gideon's or the Local Boy Scout Association

Family and friends will always remember his compassion and love for everyone he met and a heart that was so large it had room to add one more person to love. Charles, you will always be in our hearts.
