Clifford Prescott Sr

August 31, 1925 — January 30, 2016

Clifford Burke Prescott, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2016.

He was born in Clarke County, Alabama on August 31, 1925. He was the son of John Wesley Prescott and Sarah Alice Jackson Prescott. His family moved to the Selma area when he was a young child, where he was raised and spent the majority of his life. Clifford worked at the Phillies Cigar Factory prior to entering the United States Navy during World War II. After his military service, he worked many years at Swift Oil Company. He was later employed by the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 1987 with 19 years of civil service.

As a young man, Clifford met and married Lillian Frances Stone Prescott. They were married 46 wonderful years and had one son, two daughters, 9 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Frances preceded Clifford to heaven by 27 years and their reunion is most certainly precious. Later in life, Clifford was remarried to Mattie Jackson Prescott and moved to Memphis, TN, where he lived until his death.

Clifford will be painfully missed and sweetly remembered by those who survive him: His son, Clifford Burke Prescott, Jr.; his daughters, Judy Prescott Smith (Odis), and Dena Prescott Grant (Charlie); his 9 grandchildren, Tina Smith Bearden (Brig), Clifford Burke Prescott, III (Michelle), Dawn Smith Beers (Bojie), Cindy Prescott Fisher (Bruce), Pam Smith Fulmer (Steve), Karrie Prescott (Tasha), Alan Grant (Kim), Heather Johnston (Topher) and Jennifer Grant Hightower (Drew); as well as his 22 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Clifford is also survived by his wife, Mat; her sons, Eddie Maxcy and Bobby Maxcy; and her grandson Cody Maxcy.

Preceding Clifford in death were his parents, John Wesley and Sarah Alice; his wife, Frances Prescott; his five brothers, Grayson Prescott, Slater Prescott, Jesse Prescott, Henri Prescott, and Yvonne Prescott; and his two sisters, Naomi Brown and Minnie Lou Neese.

Clifford served as a deacon at West End Baptist Church and Westwood Baptist Church in Selma and was currently a member of Calvary Baptist in Memphis. He loved gospel music and sang tenor in various quartets throughout his lifetime. He loved to garden, hunt, fish, and watch Alabama football. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a dear servant to his friends and neighbors.

A celebration of his life will be held at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2016 with Rev. James Shoemake officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Pineview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great grandsons.
