Denver Paul Portwood, age 53, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center. He was born on April 15, 1968 in Selma, AL. He is the son of Ina Portwood and the late Bill Portwood.
As a junior tennis player, Paul was the top ranked player in Alabama. Paul was a graduate of Selma High School in 1986 where he won the State Tennis Championship. In 1987 he attended Huntington College on a tennis scholarship playing singles and doubles. Paul graduated with a business degree.. He worked for his family business and eventually became a partner of Portwood Realty in Selma.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Cathy Johnson Portwood, and his son, Daniel Chase Portwood, and his sister, Monica Ashworth.
Paul had many passions. One of them was the great outdoors. Tennis, golf, triathlons, marathons, hiking and biking. Anything Paul chose to do, he did with vigor.
But Paul's deepest passion was his family. Paul was a true romantic. He would be mortified to know that we are telling the world that there are boxes and boxes of love letters he wrote Cathy. He was famous for planning dates and fun travel adventures. As many big plans he made, he loved to do little surprises on a daily basis too.
The apple of his eye was Daniel. ...his mini me, his shadow. Paul spent most of his free time since the birth of Daniel at baseball games, soccer games and all activities Daniel decided to pursue. He didn't miss a thing and loved every moment. Paul taught Daniel to be strong, sensitive, have a solid moral code, and deep virtues. He also taught him to appreciate the great outdoors as well
No words can describe how much Paul will be missed by so many.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
