Dr. Karl Dee Smith passed away May 4, 2014 at Vaughan Regional Hospital in Selma, AL, due to complications of Parkinson's. He was a well-known professor of Chemistry and Physics at Wallace Community College, Selma, AL for thirty years. He touched many lives during his tenure at Wallace and truly enjoyed teaching his students. He was a member of Valley Grande Baptist Church, Valley Grande, AL.
Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Jefferson Smith and Virginia Dee (Stribling) Smith of Decatur, MS; brother, Dr. Roy Jefferson Smith, Jr. and his wife, Mildred Monroe Smith of Stuttgart, AR; sister, Vanessa James and husband, Marvel James of Memphis, TN; sister-in-law, Patricia Long Smith of Clinton, MS; in-laws, Mr. and Mrs., Jack Waggoner of Lena, MS; sister-in-law, Martha Waggoner Livingston and husband, Rep. Richard Livingston of Pulaski, MS; brother-in-law, Jack Benny Waggoner and wife, Nancy Perminter Waggoner of Lena, MS and their daughter, Jackie Michelle Billingsley of Carthage, MS.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Rebecca (Becky) Waggoner Smith; daughter, Angela Smith Soule' of North Hollywood, CA; son, Christopher Karl Smith and wife, Chandra West Smith of Homewood, AL; grandchildren, Jordan Danielle Smith and Olivia Nalani Smith of Homewood, AL and brother-in-law, James Waggoner and wife, Ann of Carthage, MS; brother, Dr. Don Louis Smith and wife, Kathe of Santa Ana, CA; sister, Dr. Linda Smith Barron and husband, Allen of Nashville, TN and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services will be Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Pineview Memory Gardens with Bro. Randy DeBrabant officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Robo Robinson, Rev. George Bennett, Mike Heath, Wayne Labbe, David Livingston, Jeffrey James and Solomon Rhodes. Honorary pallbearers will be The Maverick Sunday School Class of Valley Grande Baptist Church, John Lovett, Fred Harmon, Stevie Smitherman, Jack Frost and Mrs. Shirley Cherry Barker, his lab assistant at Wallace Community College for approximately thirty years and the Valley Grande Baptist Choir.
