Ellen "Boots" Jane Kirk Friday

Ellen "Boots" Jane Kirk Friday of Selma, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023 at the Lighthouse Nursing Home at the age of 90.

She was born in Calhoun County, Alabama in the city of Anniston on November 24, 1932 to the late Ormond Kirk and the late Chrissie Marshall Kirk as the oldest of 4 children. In the 1940's they moved to the Selma area and she attended Dallas County High School in Plantersville where she acquired the nickname "Boots". At age 17, she married James Vann "J.V." Friday, Jr., a union that lasted 72 years until he passed away in August 2022. When asked what their secret was she replied, "patience and long-suffering with joyfulness."

"Boots worked at Craig Air Force Base and later as service representative for the Social Security Administration. She was an excellent seamstress and also loved to crochet. She gifted many afghans for brides and babies. She and JV went on many farm tours and cruises often including the entire family. She became very good at working all the details for their travels.

She is survived by her children, Kathryn Simpkins (Robert), Jimmy Friday (Betty) , and Meg Elrod (Kent); grandchildren, Justin Friday (Kasey), Joshua Ashcraft (Jillian), Erica Friday Stephens, Elizabeth Ashcraft Beach (Tommy), Kristen Lee (Dustin), Kimberly Ervin (Brandon), and Ashley Friday; 10 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way; and numerus nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 72 years, James Vann "J.V." Friday, Jr.; her grandson, Brian Douglas Sanderson; and siblings, Ormond Kirk, Mary Youngblood, and Julia Byrom.

In celebration of her life a service will be held on Friday, April 7, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Selma Funeral Home.

A private burial will be on Sunday, April 9, 2023.
