Elsie Boor

December 11, 1921 — February 19, 2015

Elsie Mae Herrod Boor, age 93, of Plantersville, AL, passed away February 19, 2015 surrounded by her loved ones. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was born to William L. Herrod and Thelma Motley on December 11, 1921 on the family farm, near Plantersville. After working as a crane operator building the Panama Canal, W.L. came home for a break. His father asked him what would make him stay home and not go back to work in the humid, disease-ridden tropics. He replied, "Thelma!" Soon thereafter, Edna Earl, Olga B., Elsie Mae and John Will were born. The family was enveloped by its loving parents and the foundation of their lives were built on the farm. Elsie Mae graduated second in her class of eleven from Billingsley High School. Soon after graduation, Elsie Mae went to secretarial school in Atlanta, GA. Recruiters came down from Washington, D.C. to select worker for the Pentagon. Within 48 hours, she was on a train going north. In 1944, she met and married Homer "Fuzzy" Boor--a sailor who grew up in the farming foothills of Pennsylvania. Over the next eleven years, their marriage produced Linda Carol, William Harold, Stanley Morrell, Winston Conrad and Mark Cromwell. During that time, she supported "Fuzzy" as his career progressed and cared for their children. Finally, Elsie Mae decided that she wanted to exercise her independence and re-join the working world, so she obtained employment with J. C. Penney's and retired from there in 1986. After his retirement, Fuzzy build a homestead on Elsie Mae's childhood farm near Plantersville. They moved into the house in 1986 and became active in the Autauga County Rural Development Committee of Prattville and the Selma Chapter of National Association of Retired Federal Employees. They attended Bethel Baptist Church of rural Autauga County and were active card players at the Billingsley Senior Center. Elsie Mae welcomed others freely to her home and table. She thoroughly enjoyed life. Her passions were reflected in the beauty of flowers and the company of devoted family and friends. In all aspects of her life--as a wife, mother, employee and friend, Elsie Mae devoted her energy to the pursuit of excellence, the demonstration of courage and determination and the tenets of faith and hope....mirroring the patterns set by her parents....and reflecting those same patterns to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The lasting legacy she wove with her husband, Homer, is one forged by kind hearts and personal fortitude, and perhaps most memorable of all, a generous and keen sense of humor. They were quick to laugh and eager to put a smile on someone else's face. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Boor; parents, William L. and Thelma Herrod, sisters, Edna Ousley and Olga Ousley and brother, John Herrod. Surviving are her children, Linda Boor, William "Buddy" Boor, Stanley (Kate) Boor, Winston (Barbara) Boor and Mark Boor; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Rob Coburn officiating. Interment will be in Colee Cemetery in Jones, AL with Selma Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Friday, February 27, 2015 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home.
