Gary Allen Johnson, age 60, passed away on December 6, 2019 after a long and courageous battle against the progressive disease, Muscular Dystrophy.
Gary was born on November 17, 1959 in Tachikawa, Japan to his loving parents SMSgt James A. Johnson and Mrs. Virginia Burns Johnson. He also had two older sisters Shelia Johnson Martin and Jamie Johnson Moreland as well as one younger sister Leslie Johnson Miller. He lived in Selma since 1970, and attended Southside High School until he graduated in 1978.
Gary worked at Craig AFB in Selma as Audio Visual Technician for the Alabama State Troopers training center until 1982.
Gary had one daughter Ashley Johnson Reed, age 36. For many years, Gary worked tirelessly alongside his Sister, Jamie, to build and grow the regional Bargain Finder magazine. Gary loved spending time with his family, listening to 70’s rock music, and working on his computer.
Gary was the kindest, smartest, and wittiest man you could ever meet. Despite his difficult circumstances, he never lost his million dollar smile. He was an amazing father, grandfather, son, and brother, and his absence leaves a hole in the hearts of his loved ones that will never be filled.
He was preceded in death by his Mother, Virginia Johnson, Father, SMSgt. James Allen Johnson, Sister, Jamie Moreland, and Nephew, Drew Starke. He is survived by his beloved Daughter, Ashley Johnson Reed (Jeremiah) of Valley Grande, his Grandchildren, who were the light and joy of his life, Landon Bishop, Lindsay Bishop, Jamison Johnson, Jaxson Reed, Emily Reed, Hailey Reed, and Landon Reed. He is also survived by his Sisters, Sheila Martin (David) of Selma and Leslie Miller (Mac), Nephew, Lee Willet, and Nieces Olivia Thompson and Mae-Adeline Miller, all of St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Visitation will be Thursday December 12, 2019 from 12 to 2pm at Lawerance Brown Funeral Home in Selma followed by graveside services at 3pm at New Live Oak Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Jon Chapelle from Selma Church of God. Pallbearers will be Landon Bishop, Lee Willet, Austin Lightfoot, Randy Willet, Jeremiah Reed, and Bobby Martin.
