George Hughes

January 12, 1931 — April 25, 2013

George Webb Hughes, 82, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at his home. Visitation will be Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Selma Funeral Home from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Services will immediately follow with Dr. Jerry W. Light, Sr. officiating. Internment, with full military honors, will be at Pineview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife of 59 years, Miriam Powers Hughes; one daughter, Leah Hughes (Jim) Kinniburgh, Daphne, AL; two grandchildren, Tyler Webb Robbins, Boca Raton, FL and Avery Karen Robbins, Daphne, AL; one brother, Levern (Bill) Hughes and one sister, Dorothy Ann (Bill) Colburn, Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Denise Hughes Kirkland; his parents, Sanford R. and Bessie Sessoms Hughes; siblings Kathleen Hughes Clark, Robert Edward Hughes, and Charles Ward Hughes. Mr. Hughes was born and reared in Fayetteville, N.C. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and the United States Air National Guard retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. He joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1963 and retired in 1993. During his tenure, he qualified for 30 years of Metropolitan sales honors becoming a life member of the Metropolitan Life Million Dollar Round Table and the exclusive President's Club. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church and served on the Craig Credit Union Board of Directors for over 20 years. An avid golfer and fisherman, he enjoyed riding his Bush Hog and maintaining his lawn. His favorite past time was his early morning walks, in his neighborhood each day, with his special buddies, John Jernigan and James Wooley. Pallbearers will be Glen Sexton, James Cecil Redd, Houston Edwards, James Hines, Dawson Hastings, and Mark Boswell. Honorary pallbearers will be the Maverick Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church. The family requests no flowers but memorial gifts may be made to the Sanctuary Choir, First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1186, Selma, AL, 36702-1186.
