Haddox Jowers (Son) Autrey died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, June 10th, 2017, in Pensacola, Florida. Haddox was born July 28, 1916 in Pine Hill, Alabama, and moved to Selma as a young adult. He married Evelyn Louise Chandler on December 27, 1939, and they enjoyed seventy years of marriage before her death on July 2, 2010. Other family members who predeceased Mr. Autrey were his grandson Mark Autrey, and his daughter-in-law Barbara Autrey. Surviving are his children Kenneth (Pamela) Autrey, Larry Autrey, and Linda Garris, Grandchildren Debbie (Danny) Farmer, Kathy (Andrew) Nelson, Morgan (Hunter) Bailey, Laurie Kittrell, Mike (Tommie) Autrey, Valerie (Mandy) Autrey, and Grant Garris, as well as fifteen great-grandchildren and eighteen great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Autrey grew up during The Great Depression and was only able to complete eighth grade, yet he was a self-taught and successful businessman. He was manager for Dixie Highway Express until bought out, and later was vice-president of LeaseWay Preferred Trucking Company, all based in Selma, Alabama. He was very active in The Lions Club and The Central Alabama Fair, and was a member of The Barrett Road United Methodist Church.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 12th at The Lawrence Brown Service Funeral Home, with visitation at 1:00 PM and the funeral service at 2:00 PM.
