Hazel Salter

April 14, 1924 — November 7, 2013

Hazel Dees Salter, age 89, born in Montgomery County, AL, April 14, 1924 passed on to heaven from her earthly home in Selma on Thursday, November 7, 2013.

Mrs. Salter was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Salter, of 57 years, and her parents Marion & Eula Dees, and her brother Marion Dees, Jr.

She is survived by sons Gary Salter (Camille) of Panama City Beach, FL, Larry Salter (Dianne) of Birmingham, and daughter Beckie Campbell of Panama City Beach, FL, as well as 4 grandchildren: Camie Jones of Selma, Cyndi Smith & Chandra Ryals of Birmingham, and Connie Redden of Panama City Beach. She also has 7 great grandchildren: Noah Campbell of Troy, Ben & Colleen Jones of Selma, Abby & Alyssa Ryals and Braydon & Braxdon Smith of Birmingham.

Hazel graduated from Montgomery County High School as Salutatorian in 1942. After graduating from Troy University with a BS in 1966, she obtained her Masters of Education from the University of Montevallo in 1972. She taught Algebra & Geometry at Albert G Parrish High School, Morgan Academy, Meadowview Christian School, Keith High School, Tipton Jr. High, and Carlowville High School; retiring in 1988.

Many will remember Ms Hazel as one who frequently visited the hospitals and nursing homes. She and her husband hosted many a fish fry, quail supper, or other entertainment at their home. She loved her Lord Jesus Christ and her many friends ... often telling them of her love!

She accomplished much in her almost 90 years of life that she enjoyed so much. Among the responsibilities she undertook were: Secretary to Selma Community Concert, Exhibit Coordinator for the Central Alabama Fair, Director of Selma City Clean Up for 12 years, Cub Scout Leader, President several times of Elkdale Garden Club, Camp Director of the Selma Baptist Association, and a charter member of Elkdale Baptist Church where she was a long time Sunday School teacher, Training Union Director, Choir member, and Women on Mission and GA Director.

She loved to camp at Wind Creek State Park, vacation at Panama City Beach, and travel. The Salters have traveled in all states except Arizona, and also traveled abroad.

Visitation will be at Lawrence Funeral Home Friday, November 8, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00p.m. Funeral services will be at Elkdale Baptist Church Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Elwood Sims, Rev. Guy Anderson, and Rev. Cory Horton officiating. The family will also receive well wishers an hour preceding the service. Burial will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Butch & Ben Jones, Brandon, Brayden, & Braxton Smith, Noah Campbell, and Alex Ryals. Honorary pallbearers are: Neil Epler, Winfred Brown, Ben Turner, Bob Canada, Bob Coale, Dr. Park Chittom II, Lewis Singley, and Bob Frazier.
