Henry Nell Jackson Barnes, born on August 1, 1944, in San Bernardino, California, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025, in Piedmont, South Carolina. She lived a life filled with compassion, joy, and a ceaseless commitment to those she loved and served.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Monroe Jackson and Emma Louise Ratliff Jackson; brother, John Clayton "J.C." Jackson.
She is survived by son, Michael (Suzanne) Kent; grandchildren, Catherine (Austin) Carlton and Erin Kent; great-grandchildren, Drake Carlton and Raylee Carlton; sister, Margie (Robin) Graham and a host of nieces and nephews.
Throughout her career, Nell was known for her diligent work as a bookkeeper. Her most recent position was at Meadow's Tire, where she tirelessly worked until her well-deserved retirement in 2010. Prior to that, she contributed her skills to Selma Nephrology, building lasting relationships along the way. She also worked for many years at Craig Air Force Base in Civil Service.
A warm and giving soul, Nell exemplified the true spirit of kindness. She often put others before herself, guiding friends and family with her warm-hearted nature. Cooking and entertaining were not merely hobbies for her; they were acts of love. Her home was a gathering place where family and friends cherished countless meals and shared laughter that echoed long after dinner plates were cleared.
Nell's love extended deeply to her grandchildren, with whom she created unforgettable memories. Together, they played games, colored, and explored the world of art, sharing joyful afternoons filled with creativity and laughter. These moments were treasures that exemplified the rich familial bonds she nurtured with pride.
A devoted member of Westwood Baptist Church prior to her move to South Carolina in 2012, Nell continued her spiritual journey in her new community. She became an integral part of Wren Baptist Church, where she enjoyed playing the piano, offering her talents to the church.
Nell leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering strength. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and were touched by her remarkable presence. As we remember her, we celebrate a life beautifully lived, marked by faith, family, and an endless desire to uplift those around her.
Graveside services will be Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at New Live Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma, prior to the service.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Jackson, Jesse Jackson, Robin Graham, Kristian Stratoberdha and Austin Carlton.
