James Vann "J.V." Friday, Jr. age 95 of Burnsville passed away on Monday August 1, 2022, at his home.
He was born in Selma on October 22, 1926, to the late James Vann Friday, Sr., and the late Ruby Marguerite Barnes Friday.
After graduating from Dallas County High School in Plantersville, AL; J.V. enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Having never been outside of Alabama, he was sent to Great Lakes Illinois for training. He left San Francisco, CA on the USS Intrepid (CV-11) on February 17, 1945. He was in the Pacific Theater and was involved in several major battles including The Battle of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in September 1946 as the war had ended. He returned to his beloved Burnsville where he maintained a very strong work ethic his entire life as a farmer, cattle owner, and catfish farmer.
He sat on the board of the Alabama Farmers Federation of Dallas County from 1967-2022. J.V. and Bootsie enjoyed many years of travel including tours, cruises, Amtrak Trains, trips and many of these included the entire family.
He truly lived as an example of "The American Dream" and was a part of "The Greatest Generation." J.V. trusted the faith of Jesus Christ for his eternal salvation and now sleeps in the Lord.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Ellen Jane Kirk Friday affectionately known as "Bootsie"; children, Kathryn Friday Simpkins (Robert), James V. "Jimmy" Friday, III (Betty), and Margaret "Meg" Friday Stone (Kent Elrod); grandchildren, Justin Kirk Friday (Kasey), Joshua Ryan Ashcraft (Jillian Stewart), Erica Friday Stephens, Elizabeth Ashcraft Beach (Tommy), Kristen Stone (Dustin Lee), Kimberly Stone (Brandon Ervin) and Ashley Friday; great-grandchildren, Grayson Henry Sanderson, Mason Friday, Owen Friday, Nathan Friday, Stella Anne Stephens, Kaden Beach, Logan Beach, Madelyn Lee, Kennedy Lee, and Reagan Lee; brother, Charles W. Friday (Carol); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Brian Douglas Sanderson; and sister, Dorothy Friday Stoves.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Selma Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
