James B. Guthrie
James B. Guthrie, age 83, of Selma, died Wednesday February 22, 2012. Mr. Guthrie served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1971. He toured in Vietnam, Korea, Philippines and Germany and received a Bronze Star, 5 Air Medals, Commendation Medal, Meritorios Service Medal and many others. From 1971 to 1991 Mr. Guthrie served as the director for the City of Selma Parks and Recreation Department. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, Retired Officers Association, Past Member of 10 years on the Board of Directors at Grist YMCA and the Selma Country Club. Mr. Guthrie was an avid golfer and hunter and most of all loved to spend time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Tyndall Guthrie; sons, John Todd (Karen) Guthrie and James Kevin (Melanie) Guthrie; grandchildren, Justin Guthrie, Heather Guthrie and Jordan Guthrie; sister, Hazel Hamilton; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
A chapel service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday February 24, 2012 at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home with Reverend Lee Tate officiating and burial following in New Live Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. at the funeral home Friday.
