James Small, Sr.

On January 25, 2020 James Lester Small, Sr. took his heavenly flight at the age of 72, surrounded by his family. He was born July 21, 1947 to W.H. and Ruby Small. James married Joyce, the love of his life, on August 19, 1967.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Small; children, Jimbo (Vanessa) Small, Michelle Small Sebren, Whitley (Roger) Chandler and Charles (Martha) Gilmore; grandchildren, Ashley (Abigail) Small, Robin Small, Hunter (Riley) Hopkins, Kendall Mott, Ivy Small, Ariel Small and Alexis Small and brother, Bill Small.

James was reunited in heaven with his parents, W.H. and Ruby Small; brothers, David Small, Sr., Jack Small and Gregory Foster; nephews, Bryant Smith and Butch Foster.

He was known for his love for his family, friends, Alabama Football and NASCAR. He retired from Asplundh Tree Experts after 47 years of service. James served in the Army National Guard on Active Duty for six years and was a member of the Moose Lodge for over 20 years.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Crosspoint Christian Church with Rev. Jimbo Small and Pastor Roger Chandler officiating. Interment will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church at 1:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Kendall Smith, David Smith, Christopher Lee, John Lee, Ricky Gilmore, James Gilmore, David Small, Matthew Small and Robert Gilmore.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sonny Powell, Benny Willis, Tommy Swindal, Charles Gilmore, Michael Bo Gilmore, Rex Osburn, Jack Calvert, Sonny Gilmore, Robert Byrd, Rodney Morris, Dale Allday, Robbie Watson, Harold Moran, Dennis Small and Jimbo Castle.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Selma-Dallas County Animal Shelter; 118 County Road 830, Jones, Alabama 36749.
