Mr. James Woodrow Wilson, 89, of Selma, Alabama went to be with his Lord, July 7, 2010, at his home. Funeral services will be held at Elkdale Baptist Church, Sunday, July 11th, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Reverend Cory Horton will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday July 10, at Lawrence Funeral Home. Pall Bearers will be John Bowers, Robert Caver, Michael Caver, Ferrell Ford, Tim Gibbs, Phillip Lewis, Don Rose, and Brad Smith. Honorary Pall Bearers will be members of the Frank Earnest Sunday School Class of Elkdale Baptist Church.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, James Harvey Wilson and Martha Smith Wilson Brown. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Marilyn Seale Wilson and his three children, Lynn Wilson Dailey (Bill) of McCordsville, IN, James W. Wilson, Jr. (Rachel) of Alabaster, AL, and Richard L. Wilson (Janet) of Selma, AL; six granddaughters, Rebecca Dailey Crull (Shawn) of McCordsville, IN, Amanda Wilson Sessions (Adam) of Williston, ND, Sarah E. Wilson, and Kimberly L. Wilson of Alabaster, AL, Shelly Wilson Butt (Mahir) of Mobile, AL, Jessica Wilson Smith (Matt) of Orem, UT and five great grandchildren, Brannon and Alex Crull of McCordsville, IN, Amirah Butt of Mobile, AL, and Arianna and Liam Smith of Orem, UT.
Born in Selma, on January 24, 1921, Mr. Wilson was a 1939 graduate of Selma High School. After graduation he attended Anderson Airplane School in Nashville, TN and worked for Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank, CA. He entered the US Army Air Corp, where he served for two and one half years, and three additional years in the US Army Air Corp Reserve. Mr. Wilson served in the European Theater in WWII in the 99th Air Drone Squadron of the 8th Air Corp as an Aerial Gunner. He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion.
Upon completion of military service, Mr. Wilson worked for the Southern Railroad, retiring in 1982. He was also a member of The Masonic Lodge for over 60 years.
Most dear to his heart, was being a charter member of Elkdale Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Superintendent, long time Sunday School teacher and sang in the Choir for over 50 years, as well as many other responsibilities. In 2008 Mr. Wilson was conferred the office of Deacon Emeritus of Elkdale Baptist Church.
