JoAnn Butts

February 21, 1939 — February 13, 2025

JoAnn Butts passed away February 13, 2025 at the age of 85. She was born February 21, 1939 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late John Stone and Irene Kilgore Stone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. "Tony" Butts; daughters, Ava Rowan and Regina Haggard.

She is survived by her daughters, Iva (Dick) Boozer and Martha Manderson; son, Lowell (Liz) Butts; son-in-law, Mike Rowan; grandchildren, Ivie (Jason) Roberts, Joanna Patterson, Lindsay Manderson, Megan Manderson, Wayne Hart; Nelson (Shellee) Bullard, Forrest (Mallory) Butts, Hunter (Lindy) Butts, Amy Rowan and Jay Rowan; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

JoAnn was a beloved mother and Meme to all who knew her. She had a heart full of love and a spirit that touched the lives of everyone around her. A familiar face in Selma, JoAnn was well-known for her role as the owner of several local restaurants, including the beloved Mr. Waffle, Graystone, and Meme’s Diner.

In addition to her passion for the restaurant business, JoAnn was a dedicated corporate Avon district manager for many years. She found joy in building connections and friendships through her work, and was known for her caring nature and unwavering generosity.

Her greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her family and friends. She treasured every moment with her loved ones, and always made sure to share her love in every way she could. Whether enjoying the beach or visiting family in Chattanooga, JoAnn’s warmth and presence made every moment special.

JoAnn had a beautiful smile that could light up the darkest days, and a selfless spirit that guided her actions throughout her life. She took pride in feeding others, not only through her restaurants but also by ensuring that those who were homebound or in need were taken care of. Her legacy of compassion, kindness, and family-first values lives on through all who knew her.

She will be dearly missed, but her love and light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
