John Furniss Callaway, 85, of Selma, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012 at Park Place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Church Street United Memorial Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Zeigler officiating. Visitation will follow the service.
Mr. Callaway was born September 21, 1926 in Selma to Dr. Eugene and Mrs. Edith Thompson Callaway. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Vickers Allen Callaway and James Alison Callaway. He is survived by son, John Furniss Callaway, Jr. (Teresa) of Sylacauga and grandchildren Rachel Callaway Holt (Sam) of Alpharetta, Ga., Michael John Callaway of Birmingham and Clare Callaway Kranz (Steven) of Dallas, Tx.; and Mrs. Vickers Allen Callaway (Marilyn) of Selma and grandchildren Caroline Allen Callaway of Atlanta, Ga., Vickers Allen Callaway, Jr. and William Benjamin Callaway of Tuscaloosa
After graduating from Parrish High School in 1945, Mr. Callaway served in U.S. Army as an M.P. assigned to Germany. He returned to Alabama and worked many years in the lumber business. During his retirement years he especially enjoyed improvising on the paino, playing cards.with his budies and attending the Friday morning prayer breakfast.
