John Buster Mayo, Jr. (Jack)

Born - July 15, 1921; died - April 13, 2012

Jack was a lifelong resident of Pleasant Hill, Alabama. Proceeded in death by his parents, Susie Simonton Mayo and John Buster Mayo and brother Paul Mayo. Survived by wife Mary Louise Cameron Mayo, sister Nettie Staggers (Rucker) and brother Joe (Francis) Mayo, Children John Buster Mayo, III, Louise Wood (George), Turner Mayo (Anne), Elizabeth Nicholson (Bob), grandchildren Kathryn Winter (Doug), Karolyn Mayo, Turner Mayo, Jr., Clay Allen, Grace Allen, John Mayo, Sam Mayo, Joseph Middleton (Heather), Minge Wright, Sarah Wilkinson (Joey), Robert Nicholson, David Nicholson, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in accounting. Immediately upon graduation, he served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in North Africa and the Middle East. He was present at Yalta during President Roosevelt's summit and was forced to stay over after completion of the summit when the President's own plane developed engine trouble and his crew "loaned" the President an engine.

After the war he married Mary Louise Cameron and came home to Pleasant Hill to farm with his father and brothers as J. B. Mayo & Sons.

He served as both a Deacon and Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Selma. He was a kind and honorable man who would always welcome a stranger to his table.

After retirement from farming he planted trees and enjoyed working as an assistant mail carrier in Sardis.

The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Annie Dunklin, Natalie Rush, Rhonda Burrton and Cahaba Hospice.

Visitation will be Monday April 16, 2:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with graveside services to follow there at 3:00 with Lawrence Brown- Service Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers will be Turner Mayo, Jr., Clay Allen, Joey Wilkinson, Robert Nicholson, David Nicholson, Joseph Middleton, Sam Mayo and John Mayo. Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Buster, Dr. Clyde Cox, John Stringer, George Wood, Sr., Francis Middleton, Teddy Pouncey, and Doug Snook.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association, care of Pam Reeves, 1890 County Road 12, Sardis, AL 36775 or Cahaba Hospice, 410 Church Street, Selma, AL 36701.
