John F. Powell, Jr.

John F. Powell Jr., of Hoover, died Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the age of 88. He was born April 7, 1935 in Bessemer, Alabama.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Geneva (Caretti) Powell; brother-in-law, Glen E. Thompson; godson Richard (Bonnie) Caretti.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia Gillis Powell; daughter, Patti (Ed) McCurdy; step-grandchildren, Sarah Peyton (John Ward) Weiss and Edward Sellars (Joanna) McCurdy III; step-great-grandchildren Edward Sellers “Mac” McCurdy IV and Ward Elsberry Weiss; sister, Mary Lee Thompson; nieces, Jean (Kenny) Smith and Lee Ann Drake; godson Mike (Wendy) Neason.

John graduated from The University of Alabama in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Business and later graduated from Birmingham School of Law. He began working for Tom Gloor Chevrolet and ultimately retired from Alabama Power Company.

He enjoyed attending Crimson Tide football, baseball, gymnastics, and basketball events and also serving as The Godfather to all who knew him. However, he was most proud of being Papa Powell to Mac and Ward.

A visitation will be held at Saint Mark United Methodist Church in Vestavia Hills Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. and a memorial service will follow at 11:30. A graveside service will be held at Oakview Cemetery in Lowndesboro Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.
