Joseph Donald Britton, Sr., 81, of Selma, died Sunday, December 27, 2009. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 31, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown- Service Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Fancher and Rev. George Jones officiating and burial following at New Live Oak Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents; John Milton Britton, Sr. and Mary Black Britton, brothers; Carl, Kirby and Charlie Britton, son; Joseph D. Britton, Jr. and granddaughter, Stephanie Urrea.
Mr. Britton, know as Donnie to his friends, is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Carter Britton, Daughters; Mary Ruth Small (Billy) of Gulf Breeze, Fl., Barbara Miles (Glenn) of Selma, brother; John Melton Britton, Jr.,of Selma, sister; Hildridge Moseley of Montgomery, daughter-in-law; Carolyn Britton of Selma, grandchildren; Dennis Small, April Selman, Bobbi Jo Paraiso, Doni Marie Sanchez, Mike Britton, Melissa Britton Vardaman, Anna Anderson, Brittony Henderson and 14 great-great grandchildren.
At the age of 16, Donnie began work at the cigar factory as a mechanic. Later during the Korean Conflict, he was mobilized with Company C from Selma. He joined the Ranger Company, took paratrooper training, and jumped out of the first 19 planes he went up in. After his time of active service, Donnie returned to the cigar factory. Because of his determination to succeed, he advanced to master mechanic, then to shift superintendent, and later was promoted to plant manager, a position he held for 20 years. Pallbearers will be Glenn Miles, Mike Britton, Billy Small, Dennis Small, Chris Vardaman and John Britton, III.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, from 5:00 é��é��é�" 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, send memorials to your favorite charity.
