One of Selma's long-time residents passed away today due to complications from brain surgery. She was 92.
June Cohn was born in Selma to Louise Rich Eagle and Abe Bernard Eagle. She grew up on Arsenal Street and spent the majority of her life in the town, the past 55 years at her home in Houston Park.
Following graduation from Selma High, she attended Stephens College in St. Louis and then transferred to LSU. While still a high school student, she met her future husband Seymour Cohn, who was in basic training at Craig Field, when he attended Friday night services at Temple Mishkan Israel, and she gave him a ride back to the base following the service. A friendship ensued, and they corresponded throughout World War II when Seymour was stationed in North Africa and Italy. They married when he returned to this country in 1945, and June and Seymour remained active members of the Temple throughout her life.
Seymour joined S. Eagle & Sons, June's family's department store in Selma, shortly after their marriage, and took over management of the enterprise upon the death of June's father in 1953. Driven by her love for fashion, June opened The Young Sophisticate Shop on the second floor of Eagle's in the early 1960s, and for many years thereafter she attended to the fashion needs of the young girls of Selma.
Following the closing of Eagle's, June and Seymour opened Eagle World Travel on Broad Street and provided travel services to the people of Selma and neighboring towns while traveling themselves to Europe, Israel, Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Far East and countless places within the United States.
She spent many happy years as a retiree, traveling to Boston regularly to be with her family there, playing bridge with her friends (never very well) at the Selma Country Club, serving on the Council of Jewish Women and joining other couples in several supper clubs. During her whole life, she never lost her interest in fashion.
June is survived by her husband Seymour of Selma; her son Rick and daughter in-law Carol Kaplan of Weston, MA; her grandson Zack of Brooklyn; her brother and sister-in-law Alan and Joanne Eagle of Palo Alto; her nieces and nephew Deanne Eagle of New York City and Kaaren Sipes of San Mateo, CA and Alan Eagle of Los Altos Hills, CA; her sister-in-law Selma Singer of Atlanta; and her cousins Royce Wells of Austin and Ron Rosenberg of Tucson.
There will be a graveside service for June at Live Oak Cemetery on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Steve Grossman officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home Directing. A gathering in her memory at her home in Houston Park following the service.
