died March 14, 2010 at her home in Selma. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Frank Cothran, Jr. on July 27, 1985. Born on May 4, 1913 in Montgomery, Alabama, Mrs. Cothran was the daughter of James Osgood and Elizabeth Shirley Grogan. Her father, Dr.Grogan, served in Selma as minister at Church Street Methodist Church. Mrs. Cothran was the youngest of six Grogan daughters, all of whom have preceded her in death. In her early years, Mrs. Cothran, known as ���Katty���, worked in broadcasting with the local radio station and taught Bible in the Selma City Schools. She later began her life career as the Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church and was associated for many years with the Selma-Dallas County Public Library. After retirement, she continued to support the programs of the church and in 1999 was named as the First Presbyterian Church Woman of the Year. Most of her later years were spent attending and supporting First Presbyterian, the church that she loved. She is affectionately remembered as ���Sister,��� and was the focal point of many weekly newspaper articles written by her daughter, Becky Cothran- Nichols, Library Director. Survivors include three children: George Frank Cothran III (Jackie) of Selma, James Grogan Cothran (Mary Lou) of Fairhope, and Rebecca Cothran Nichols (Jim) of Selma. Grandchildren include George Frank Cothran, IV (Lauri), James Charles Cothran (Tracey), David Boling Cothran (Tonya), all of Selma, Kathrine Cothran Holmes (Dwayne) of Oxford, AL, Christine Sweeney Aiken (Tom) of Fairhope, and Mary Peyton Sweeney Peppo (Bret) of Concord, CA, as well as a host of great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Ron Stone officiating. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to First Presbyterian Church, the Selma Dallas County Public Library or a charity of your choice.
