Walter Levert Jones departed earth, destination Heaven, on January 17, 2024. He lived a long and blessed life after arrival in his parent’s home on May 15, 1939 in Perry County, AL.
He is now home with His Lord and welcomed by his parents Casey and JoAnn Hopkins Jones, wife of 45+ years Linda Chambers Jones, brother Lonnie Jones, and granddaughter Charli Jones Parker.
Awaiting a later departure date are his children Tim (Stacy), Trease (Eric) Dawson, Tommy, and Torrey (Tory), and a brother Donald (Marsha). Grandchildren are Jed (Lauren) Kirk, Casey (Haleigh) Jones, Christian Jones, Sarah Gresham Jones, Harrison Jones, Chambers Jones, and surviving spouse of Charli, Jamie Parker. Great-Grandchildren are Jim Parker, Dolli Parker, Judy Jones, and two more on the way. He also had a slew of nieces and nephews, and caretaker/friend Rebecca Smith.
Levert spent his working life as a builder. He built everything from garages to schools to hospitals. His longtime employer was Frasier-Ousley, who continued to extend friendship and inclusion even after his retirement. Unknown to many, Levert and Donald once had a cabinet shop they built for the purpose of punishing their children who were forced to work there.
He spent his last thirty-five years as a pastor with thirty-plus of those at Hope Baptist Church. The family is deeply indebted to his church family who truly loved Daddy and Mama. We appreciate the place and space the church gave them to serve the Lord.
Daddy was always an outdoorsman. He had the face cancers to prove it. He hunted and fished year-round. We were either freezing in the woods or baking in a boat. While he did it all, his favorite activity was wing shooting. In his prime, he had few rivals in a pea patch chasing quail or in a corn field leading passing doves.
The Jones house was a loud and wonderful place to grow up. It was not hard to know where we would be – a ball field, fishing hole, or chasing some varmint in the woods. He was involved in whatever involved us.
Dad came from a time before parenting books and child-rearing blogs. He made up for a lack of book-learning of how to rear children by being a close personal part of our lives. He took us everywhere with him. We have great memories of crappie cane poles six wide, piling in the old green Willis Jeep, and eating fried fish at the river trailer. Even until this past week, he was deeply interested in every member of the family. He lived through the stories of the kids, grands, and greats. We all hold cherished memories of Daddy, PawPaw, who loved us more than he loved himself. Most importantly, he left a legacy of faith that runs deep in our family. We all love our Lord because Levert showed us the way.
