Lyle Hamilton Smith, Jr., 90, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2016. He was raised on his family cattle farm in Minter, Alabama.
Lyle is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann Lee Smith and by his parents, Lyle Hamilton Smith, Sr. and Christine Nicolson Smith.
He attended school in Carlowville and graduated at age 16 from Carlowville High School. After graduation, Lyle attended Auburn University where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity. Upon the death of his father, he returned to Minter to take over the family business and continued raising cattle until his retirement.
An avid hunter, Lyle particularly enjoyed hunting quail and turkey with his friends and family.
He was a former member of the Dallas County School Board, President of the Dallas County Cattleman’s Association, member of Civitan International and a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Carlowville where he served on the vestry.
Lyle is survived by his three children, Deborah Smith Pass (Mark), Lyle Hamilton Smith, III (Meg) and Douglas Francis Smith (Denise). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew H. Pass (Brannan), Seth P. Pass (Carson), Cameron Pass Jackson (Eli), Morgan Smith Rigsby (Casey), Lauren Smith Cummings (Lee), Jeremy L. Smith (Mary Helen), and Rachel Smith Tate (Sam). Lyle has 11 great-grandchildren, Susan Grayton Pass, Ila Pass, Hayden Pass, Kathryn Ross Pass, Briggs Pass, Mary Lyle Rigsby, Carter Rigsby, Braxton Cummings, Collins Jackson, Davis Jackson, and Margaret Ann Smith.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Carlowville in the Parish House. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church with The Rev. Sherred Mallow officiating. Burial will directly follow at St. Paul’s Episcopal, Carlowville Cemetery with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home, Selma directing.
Pallbearers will be Matthew H. Pass, Seth P. Pass, Jeremy L. Smith, Casey R. Rigsby, Eli D. Jackson, Lee Cummings, and Sam L. Tate.
The family wishes to thank the many friends, staff and care givers at Cedar Hill Assisted Living, where he resided for 10 years.
