Marion Edwards

Marion L. (Pete) Edwards, 99 years old. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years Dorothy Ward Edwards, his parents, James Stennis Edwards and Edna Sample Edwards; son-in-law Steven L. Brown, Brothers Nathan Edwards, Thomas Melvin Edwards, Norman Edwards; Sisters Willetta Edwards Melton and Eileen Edwards Massey.
Survived by his wife of 10 years Betty J. Edwards, Sons Larry W. Edwards (Nancy), James M. Edwards (Beth), daughters Marian Edwards Carter (Van) and Iris Edwards Brown; Step-children, Neil Edwards (BJ), Susan Wilkerson (David); Brothers Robert I Edwards (Ann), Clyde Edwards and Sister Doris Edwards Oakes. Grandchildren: Brian Edwards (Donna), Tracy Edwards Pierce (Jimmy), Dana Edwards Horne (Dan), William Bradley Edwards (Jennifer), Emily Cayne Carter Rowe (Stephen), Sarah Camille Carter Morris (Caleb), Laura Lee Carter Kozusko (Joseph), Carrie Edwards Bledsoe (Rodney), Mallory Edwards Nelson. Step-Grandchildren Stephanie Brown Huovinen (Chris), Gary Brown (Dawn), Susanne Wilkerson Wesly Wilkerson (Stephanie) , Amy Morris Taylor, David Morris ; Great Grandchildren, Loren Pierce, Cole Pierce, Thomas Morris, Andrew Morris, Lily Rowe, Div Rowe, Ann Louise Rowe, Reed Bledsoe, Emily Bledsoe, Will Bledsoe, Luke Nelson, Annie Edwards, Katie Edwards, Elle Kozusko, Isla Kozusko; Step Great Grandchildren, Tristen Demas, Anna Huovinen, Chris Wilkerson and Jamie Wilkerson.
He is a WWII veteran of the European Theater, 35th Infantry Division. He is a member of the American Legion Post #20. He served on the Selma City Council.
After the war he worked for the Standard Oil Company delivering gasoline to country stores around the area. He later bought a Chevron Service Station that he ran for 24 years. After he sold that he worked for the City of Selma for 13 years. He worked part-time into his 80s when he retired to take care of his wife Dorothy during her illness.
As a longtime member of The First Baptist Church he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth choir bus driver and was a member of the Maverick Sunday School Class. One of his greatest joys was singing in the choir for over 50 years. In 1996 he sang with the First Baptist choir at Carnegie Hall in New York. Although he had no formal music training, music was a huge part of his life, and he sang from his heart. He blessed many family members and friends by singing at their weddings, comforting families with song at funerals, and other events.
Pete loved hunting and fishing and coaching little league baseball for his grandson Brad's team.
What he would like to be remembered for was his love of the Lord. He lived his life to serve God and to be an example to others. He was respected and admired by many people for his witness in the way he lived.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church Selma with Dr. Jerry Light officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Monday, December 2, 2019 in the Maverick Room of First Baptist Church Selma.
Pallbearers will be Grandsons and Great Grandsons: Brian Edwards, Brad Edwards, Cole Pierce, Thomas Morris, Andrew Morris, Eli Horne, Reed Bledsoe and Luke Nelson.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Maverick Sunday School Class.
A special thanks to his caregivers of the last few weeks Letha Fincher and Gracie Riddle.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the First Baptist Church Selma, Christian Outreach Alliance or Southern Care Hospice.
