He was born on November 13, 1948 and was raised in Dallas County. He fought valiantly and lost his battle to Multiple Myeloma after four and one-half years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto E. and Beatrice K. Godwin, Sr. and brothers, Otto Godwin, Jr. and Murray "Meat" Godwin.
He is survived by his wife, Connie E. Godwin; two devoted step-sons, Bryan A. (Sabrina) Pipkin of Darlington, SC and Christopher G. (Melissa) Vardaman of Selma, AL; grandchildren, Morgan Anne and Brianna Marie Pipkin of Darlington, SC, Christopher Davis, Joseph Grayson and Laura Kinley Vardaman of Selma, AL; loving and supportive sisters, Frances Moorer of Prattville, AL, Jeanette Williams of Coppell, TX, Revie (Wayne) Huffman of Elmore, AL and Carole Talbert of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Edrick (Pat) Godwin; faithful and supportive sister-in-law, Carol S. Smith of Selma, AL; brothers-in-law, Don (Cathy) Estes of Douglasville, GA and Mike (Shelia) Estes of Columbus, MS; numerous nieces and nephews and his loving dogs, Trucker (found at a truck stop) and Alex.
The celebration of his life will be Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bill Gardner and Ken Roberts officiating. Interment will be in Casey Church of Christ Cemetery with Selma Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday, July 31, 2009 from 6-8:00 p.m. Bikers, biker attire and bikes are welcome to lead him to his final resting place.
Marvin was a truck driver for over 18 years with Pilliod Furniture Company, several other furniture companies and Penske Logistics (Big Lots). He was an electrician, woodworker and gardener, but his passion was motorcycles and fast cars. He was an avid motorcycle rider and rode with his friends, The Georgia Group from Douglasville, Paulding and Carroll Counties in Georgia. He was known at the bike rallies for his Chuck Taylor Tennis shoes in every color, helmet hair and having a great time with everyone.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, a member of the Elk's Lodge #167 of Selma, AL, 29 Dreams and Indian Hills Motorcycle Resorts.
