Mattie Atchison

March 29, 1928 — February 9, 2012

Mattie Green Atchison, age 83, passed away February 9, 2012. Mattie Delene Dennis grew up in a large and loving family in Maplesville, AL. She married Joseph Landon Green and moved to Selma, where they enjoyed fifty-two years of marriage until his death in 2000. She and H. C. "Hank" Atchison were married in 2006. Mattie was one of the first librarians for Cedar Park Elementary School and loved working with the staff and children there for many years. She later worked for Dr. Bracey Cross. A former member of Central Baptist Church and later Elkdale Baptist Church, she most recently attended Orrville United Methodist Church. Mattie was also active with the Selma Emblem Club, holding several offices including president. She volunteered for civic and church activities and continued volunteer work for as long as her health permitted. Mattie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was loved and will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Landon Green; parents, Carrie and Isaac Allen Dennis; four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her husband, H. C. "Hank" Atchison; son, Allen and devoted daughter-in-law, Martha Green of Stanton, AL; daughter, Janis (Fred) Rogan of Birmingham, AL; beloved grandchildren, Landon, Mary Laura and Sara Rogan; sisters, Dorothy Hubbard of Talledega, AL, Jeanette (Donald) Giles of Cropwell, AL, Elizabeth (George) McCurdy of Montgomery, AL and Laura Shirley of Birmingham, AL; niece, Martha (Phillip) Williams and family of Catawba, NC and numerous nieces and nephews in the Dennis family. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cory Horton officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1-3:00 p.m. Interment will be in Pineview Memory Gardens with Selma Funeral Home directing. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family wishes to thank her special caregivers and Cahaba Hospice for their devoted care and comfort during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to your church, a favorite charity or Fixed Point Foundation, 2828 Culver Road, Birmingham AL, 35223.
