Mavis Barton Stevenson, age 86, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the home of her son in Valley Grande. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Ocmulgee Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Sumerlin officiating. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery in Uniontown, AL with Selma Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home. Mrs. Stevenson is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-one years, Lamar Edward Stevenson, Jr.; brothers, Cullen (Louise) Barton and Ralph (Dorothy) Barton; sister, Madeline Barton; parents, Walter Bryan and Vida Elizabeth Hughey Barton and nephew, Danny Barton. She is survived by her children, Kaye Elizabeth Stevenson of Houston, TX; Lamar Edward (Kaye) Stevenson, III of Montgomery, AL and Bryan Ashley (Gail) Stevenson of Valley Grande, AL; grandsons, Ian Ashley and Matthew Bryan of Valley Grande, AL; brother, James Allen (T-Bo) and Ruth Barton; niece, Martha Barton and nephews, Joe Bryan (Linda) Barton and Michael Allen (Kim) Barton. Mrs. Stevenson was born in Perry County, AL on March 26, 1927. She married Lamar Edward Stevenson, Jr. on January 20, 1952 and together they reared three children. She was a loving mother and devoted wife. Mrs. Stevenson retired from the banking industry. She was co-owner of Cherokee Ranch in Hale County. She was a member of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association, The National Rural Letter Carriers Association, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Faunsdale Homemaker Club and treasurer of Canebrake Garden Club of Faunsdale, AL. She was an accomplished seamstress, an avid gardener and had a great love for music. She loved to travel and wrote memoirs of her many adventures. She was a devoted Auburn fan with a strong competitive spirit. She had a great sense of adventure and loved life. Mrs. Stevenson was a member of Uniontown Baptist Church for over sixty years and loved singing in the choir. She was an active member of Ocmulgee Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. Pallbearers will be Wayne Irwin, Mark Harris, Mark Bedwell, Tommy Beach, Mike Barton and Mickey Barton. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Uniontown Baptist and Ocmulgee Baptist Church.
