Miriam Powers Hughes

Miriam Powers Hughes of Selma, Alabama passed away at her home on Monday, September 18, 2023 at the age of 90.

She was born Selma, Alabama on September 15, 1933 to the late Ernest Lorenza Powers and the late Lois Lee Powers.

She was a former secretary with the USAF Civil Service.

Miriam was a lifelong and active member of First Baptist Church Selma and a member of the Sanctuary Choir for more than 50 years.

This beautiful Christian lady, was better known through the years as “Mother Superior”, “Muhdear”, “Mom” by her many FBC Selma Sanctuary Choir members. Miriam Hughes always sang, from early years until the time she had to exit the choir due to eye issues. She was always faithful to the choir and ministries of FBC and always had everything under control concerning the choir (that’s why she was called “Mother Superior”). She sang solos, she checked roll, she wrote scripts for annual choir banquets, she did anything she was asked to do. Miriam was always there to support her beloved fellow choir members, and her church.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories her daughter, Leah Karen Hughes Kinniburgh; grandchildren, Tyler Webb Robbins, and Avery Karen Robbins; niece, Casey Carr; and nephew, Pat Crane

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Webb Hughes; her daughter, Miriam Denise Hughes Kirkland; and sister, Ardis Ruth Powers Crane (Ben).

Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Pineview Memory Gardens with Rev. Gordon Welch officiating.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Robbins, Esteban Arias, Art Scroggins, Dawson Hastings, Bruce Till, and Woody Till.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the Selma Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the First Baptist Church Selma Music Ministry.
