Oscar Cobb "Sam" Speight, Jr. of Northport, Alabama passed away July 22, 2015. He was born in Eufala, Alabama on October 4, 1926. He moved to Chipley, Florida where he attended grammar school and junior high school. He was a graduate of Marion Military Institute and the University of Alabama.
He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He held aeronautical ratings as a pilot, navigator, bombardier and radar observer. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal as well as other decorations. Sam was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and life member of the Retired Officers Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carlton Dudley Speight; sister, Eleanor Speight Hopkins and brother-in-law, William H. Hopkins.
He is survived by his sons, Thomas Cobb (Rocio) Speight and Robert Cobb (Kendra) Speight; daughters, Mary Charlotte Speight (Jerry) Mutter and Mary Elizabeth (Michael) Meredith; grandchildren, Robert Matthew Meredith, Garrett Cobb Speight, Samuel Keith Speight, Jerrod William Speight, Tyler Robert Speight, Kyle Ryan Speight, Caissa SueAnn Meredith, Robert Truett Meredith, Thomas Cobb Speight, Jr., Christopher Pinkham Speight and Michael Raymond Speight and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Saturday, July 25, 2015 AT 9:00 a.m. in Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.
