Richard Leon Ward, Sr., age 89, of Geneva, AL, (formerly of Selma, AL) died February 9, 2010 at Wiregrass Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. He was born September 24, 1920 in Birmingham, AL to the late Fred and Elmer Ward. The eldest of three sons, he married Clara Ruth Brantley on July 2, 1942. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Meredith Ashley Ward. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Brantley Ward; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Robin Ward of Helena, AL; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Stephen Swann of Geneva, AL; son and daughter-in-law, P. J. and Margaret Ward of Hoover, AL; grandchildren, Elyse (J) Foster of Auburn, AL, Sarah-Anne Swann of Auburn, AL, Phillip Ward of Hoover, AL and Laura Ward of Hoover, AL; great-grandchild, Madison Foster of Auburn, AL and brothers, Fred (Chris) Ward of Bessemer, AL and Gene (Pat )Ward of Travelers Rest, SC. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home with Rev. George K. Jones, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Pineview Memory Gardens with Selma Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1-2:00 p.m. Mr. Ward served in the U. S. Army and the U. S. Air Forces, attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and retired after twenty two years of service. After retirement, he worked for the U. S Postal Service in Selma, AL for twenty years. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. He enjoyed over thirty years of retirement, traveling with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
