Robert Andrew McCully, age 87, of Selma, died Saturday March 21, 2009 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. Burial will be at the Valley Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, and a memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 24, 2009 with Dr. Ron Stone officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Visitation with the family will follow the service.
McCully was born in Sharon, S.C., on December 24, 1921, to the Reverend Carl Wilson McCully and Margaret Wilson McCully. He was educated at Presbyterian College, Clinton, S.C., where he earned a B.S. in chemistry and a B.A. in economics.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Sicily, Italy, Germany and France. Following his Army service, he moved to Selma, where his mother and aunt were living. He retired from Alagasco in 1985, after working there for 33 years. McCully was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and a trustee, and taught Sunday School. He worked with the Boy Scouts when his children were growing up, and delivered meals on wheals for more than 20 years. He enjoyed gardening and watching Braves baseball.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years; Martha Jo Worrell McCully, two sons; Robert Andrew McCully Jr. (Mimi Fleming McCully), of Gastonia, N.C., and James Wilson McCully of Wake Forest, N.C., a daughter; Margaret Ellen McCully Neill (Robert Bruce Neill) of Silver Spring, Md., four grandchildren; Ellen Frances McCully, Robert Andrew McCully, III, Martha Marie McCully and Samuel Robert Neill.
Memorial gifts may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Valley Creek Presbyterian Church or the charity of ones choice.
