Sheila Diane (Johnson) Martin, age 66 of Selma, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 14, 2022. Sheila was born on March 1, 1956 in Valdosta, Georgia to her parents, James A. Johnson, SMsgt. USAF, Retired, and Virginia Burns Johnson.
During her childhood and adolescence, she lived in several U.S. states and Japan before ultimately settling in Selma with her family in 1972 when her father was transferred to Craig Air Force Base. Sheila graduated from Southside High School in 1974 and attended Wallace Community College. Sheila was a selfless and devoted wife, daughter, sister, and friend. She had a quick wit and keen sense of humor, and she remained positive throughout her 40+ year battle with Muscular Dystrophy. She never once complained or felt sorry for herself, and she always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Sheila was extremely compassionate and tenderhearted, and she had the unique ability to make everyone feel special and loved.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Jamie Moreland, brother Gary Johnson, and nephew Drew Starke.
She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, David Martin; sister Leslie Miller (Mac) of St. Simons Island, Georgia; nephew Lee Willet of St. Simons Island; nieces Ashley Reed (Jeremiah) of Valley Grande, Olivia Thompson of St. Mary’s, Georgia, and Mae-Adeline Miller of St. Simons Island; great-nieces Lindsay Bishop of Selma, Hailey Reed and Emily Reed, both of Prattville; great-nephews, Landon Bishop, Jamison Bishop, and Jaxson Reed of Selma, and Landon Reed of Prattville, sisters-in-law Judy Martin and Barbara Lowe of Selma; brother-in-law, Bobby Martin of Atlanta; special cousin, Michele Bazzel of Decatur, Alabama, and dearest friend, Julie Rives of Autaugaville, as well as many cousins and friends whom she adored. Although Sheila’s death leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled, we rejoice that she is fully healed and reunited with her family in heaven.
