Susan Elizabeth McDowell Oxford died peacefully on January 5,2013 at Cedar Hill Assisted Living. She was born on November 30, 1920 and married to Malcolm Randolph Oxford on February 1, 1942. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph Oxford; parents, David Neely McDowell and Susan Moseley McDowell; daughter, Susan (John) Randalyn Oxford Henderson; son, John McDowell Oxford, Sr. and grandson, Malcolm Randolph Oxford, II. She is survived by her daughter, Leah Oxford McLaughlin and her husband Donald Bain of Orriville; daughter-in-law, Judy Jackson Oxford of Orange Beach, Alabama; grandchildren, Dr. John David Henderson and his wife, Janine of Selma, Dr. Allen Randolph Henderson and his wife, Kerri of Selma, Vivian Henderson Dixon, of Mobile, John McDowell Oxford, Jr and his wife, Blair, of Fairhope, Susan McLaughlin Hughes and her husband, Trent of Monroeville, Oxford McLaughlin of Orrville, Randolph Bain McLaughlin and his wife, Kelly of Orrville; sister, Georgene McDowell Frasier of Selma and fourteen great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was a graduate of A.G. Parrish High School and Alabama College for Women, now known as The University of Montevallo. Always her husband's greatest supporter, she worked at his side at Oxford Manufacturing Company until his retirement. She also assisted and encouraged in his horticulture pursuits and in the restoration of the McMillan home on the river near Orrville. Elizabeth was known for her sweet smile and genuine caring for others. She was a welcoming hostess who was never too busy to visit with those who came to her Orrville home. She enjoyed flowers, bird watching and seeing that everyone who came to her home was welcomed and fed. She often said, "A good laugh makes a good day," and shared her joy in life with those around her. She was a faithful member of Orrville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for years and often picked up members who could no longer drive themselves. She has been a resident of Cedar Hill for the past four years. Elizabeth will be sorely missed, but will continue to be an inspiration and example to family and friends, to whom she was so dear. Funeral services will be at Orrville Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Selma Funeral Home. Officiating will be her pastor, Stephen Rutherford and long-time friend, Elwood Sims. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Orrville Baptist Church. The family would like to thank Dr. Jack Burns, the staff of Cedar Hill Assisted Living and Cahaba Hospice for their excellent care.
