William Mott Sr.

William Earl Mott, Sr. passed away on February 29, 2020 at the age of 92.
Services will be held at 11AM Monday, March 2 nd , 2020, at First Baptist Church Selma with Dr. Jerry Light
and Rev. Lee Tate officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Visitation will begin
at 10AM in the Maverick Social Hall. A private, family burial service will follow at New Live Oak
Cemetery.
Mr. Mott was born and raised in Selma, Alabama and always proud to claim his “East Selma” upbringing.
He often shared fond memories of growing up fishing on the Alabama River, watching cowboy movie
matinees at the Walton Theater, and playing various sports. But his favorite story to share was how he
met and courted his future bride as a student at A.G. Parrish High School. After serving overseas in the
U.S. Army following the Korean War, he returned home to marry Sybil and they began their large family.
He retired from the U.S. Post office after 30 years but also dedicated most of his spare time managing
the Edgewood School ballpark for the Selma City Recreation department and volunteering at Morgan
Academy football games where he was well known for his “Mott Burgers.” As a long-time member of
First Baptist Church Selma, he founded the Maverick Sunday School class and held the sole position of
“The Committee.” Mr. Mott was gifted with a servant’s heart and leaves a rich legacy of love to his
adoring family. “Well done thy good and faithful servant!”
He is preceded in death by his parents, Brittian and Margaret Mott, and cousin Annette Cullpepper
Mr. Mott is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sybil Mott, son Bud (Carol) Mott, daughter Becky (Bill)
Hardy, son Britt (Margaret) Mott, and daughter Beth Mott; grandsons Beau (Cat) Sommerville, Ben
Sommerville, Brian Sommerville; granddaughters Amy (Ryan) Piper, Avery (Brandon) Horton, Laura
Cameron (William) Murphy, Elizabeth (Ashley) Bowers; great-grandsons Crawford Piper, Rhett Piper,
Brittian Murphy, Bradley Bowers, Willie Sommerville; great-granddaughters Mary Kelley Murphy, Anne
Russell Bowers; sister in law Mary Ann Norris; nephews Chet Norris and Clint (Dori) Norris; great-niece
Maddox Norris; cousins Woods Culpepper and Cheri Safford; and his beloved grand dog Aubie.
Pallbearers will be Beau Sommerville, Ben Sommerville, Brian Sommerville, Chet Norris, Clint Norris,
Ryan Piper, William Murphy, Ashley Bowers, Brandon Horton, and Woods Culpepper. Honorary
pallbearers are members of The Maverick Sunday School class.
