Zula Caroline Lide-Oyler, age 61, of Sardis, AL, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Zula Mae Clark Lide and Roderick McIver Lide; grandparents, Ruth Mae Massey Clark and Victor Earl Clark, Sr. and grandparents Sallie Walker Traylor Lide and Henry Stuart Lide. She is survived by her sons, Harry McCulley (Rena' Franks) Nail, Jr. of Sardis, AL, James "Clyde" (Amy Diane Brumfield) Oyler of Franklinton, LA and Joseph Vaughn (Margaret Worth) Oyler of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Ella Kathryn Oyler, Anna Correll and David McIver Oyler; dear friends, Treb Wallace of Camden, AL and Jeanette Fail Hardin of Selma, AL; sister, Sallie Ruth Lide-Hooker; nephews, William Edward Hooker, III and Roderick McIver Lide Hooker; niece, Victoria Clark Hooker; great niece, Sarah Alston Hooker and number of aunts, uncles and cousins.. Caroline was a member of Dallas and Perry Counties pioneer families. She professed her faith at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church and later converted to the Episcopal faith. She will be well remembered for her beautiful singing voice. She sang in local choirs as well as many weddings and funerals for loved ones and friends. She aspired to have a career in country music, but elected to care for her family instead. She was the first Adult Degree graduate from Judson College, Marion, AL. She went on to use her double major in psychology and sociology to work as a juvenile probation officer in Dallas County and later as a social worker at St. Clair Correctional Facility. She also worked for the State of Alabama determining disability eligibility for residents in the southern half of the state. Before relocating to Mississippi she worked with a Birmingham attorney handling disability appeals. Caroline was extremely creative and owned Quitman Florist for a brief time until her health failed. She recently made her home in Sardis, AL with her oldest son "Mickey" and his wife Rena' Nail. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Gordon Welch officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Caroline's memory to Cahaba Hospice, Inc., 410 Church Street, Selma, AL 36701.
